One year ago today, we took a bold step towards shared success by becoming an employee-owned business.
However, the journey to employee ownership began long before the formal transition. It started with a spark – an idea nurtured through determination, resilience, and a deep commitment to building something meaningful. As Russ reflects, “There have been dark days, of course, but when the sun shines, there’s nothing quite like owning and growing a business. It’s like nurturing a child: fragile at first, then flourishing.”
When Urban Edge was founded, survival was the immediate goal. But as the practice matured, the question of succession became more than just a business decision – it became a matter of values. The move to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) was driven by a desire to preserve our culture, empower the next generation, and ensure leadership could evolve without compromising the essence of who we are.
“Succession should be about alignment, not just departure,” says Russell. “Tom and I aren’t going anywhere just yet. We see this as a passing of the baton, not an exit.”
One year into employee ownership, the impact is tangible. Dave, who joined Urban Edge 17 years ago as a graduate, shares how the studio has grown from a five-person team in a tiny office to a thriving, award-winning practice. “It’s the perfect moment to pause and celebrate the energy, creativity, and collaborative spirit that have defined the last 12 months.”
Leadership at Urban Edge is now a shared endeavour – blending long-standing Directors with emerging talent to shape the next chapter with integrity and passion. The culture has shifted from initial excitement to deep engagement, with every team member contributing to our collective success, whether through project delivery or co-creating off-site events.
For Klejda, the transition has been empowering. “There’s a real buzz about taking the business forward together,” she says. From working across sectors to leading BIM training and exploring AI tools, Klejda has embraced the opportunity to innovate and grow. “I’ve gained so much knowledge, strengthening my skills and confidence as I build my career.”
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend heartfelt thanks to our founders, Russ, Tom and Julie, for their vision and continued mentorship. We’re excited for what’s ahead as we keep growing, learning, and creating impactful work that reflects the very best of Urban Edge.
We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come and even more excited about where we’re headed. A huge thank you to our clients, collaborators, and colleagues who’ve been part of this journey.
