Located at the heart of Newark town centre, the Market Place is an attractive and historic space surrounded by beautiful Georgian and medieval buildings. Playing a vital role in the life of the town, it serves as a hub for shopping, socialising, and community events. However, the space faced several challenges that Newark and Sherwood District Council sought to address through a process of design and engagement. Urban Edge have been appointed to work with the client team up to RIBA Stage 3, collaborating with stakeholders including the Town Council, County Council, and Historic England to develop proposals informed by community aspirations.
The redevelopment aims to create a more welcoming and vibrant environment through high-quality repaving, improved accessibility, and enhanced functionality for visitors, traders, and residents alike. The final scheme includes a rationalised paving layout, new street furniture, urban trees, and an innovative lighting design, all contributing to a refreshed and enduring public space that celebrates Newark’s heritage while supporting its future growth.
