We have been appointed to lead the detailed design and delivery stages of the landscape element of the Newark Castle and Gardens project. This ambitious scheme will breathe new life into one of Newark’s most treasured landmarks, enhancing the castle itself while reimagining its surrounding landscape. Our work forms a key part of a wider transformation that will create a revitalised centrepiece celebrating Newark’s rich heritage and offering an inspiring destination for both the local community and visitors from further afield.
Newark Castle has stood proudly at the entrance to the town for almost 900 years and remains deeply cherished by local residents. While the architectural restoration and interpretation works are being led by others, Urban Edge is responsible for shaping the external environment that supports and elevates these improvements. The Gatehouse, recognised by Historic England as the most complete example of its kind in England, underscores the importance of sensitive conservation, while the wider project introduces innovative ways to bring the castle’s history to life through reconstructed rooms, new gallery spaces and a tower‑top viewing platform offering sweeping views across the Trent Valley.
A central focus of our role is the enhancement and protection of Newark Castle’s historic gardens. These much‑loved grounds will be sensitively revitalised to provide a welcoming, sustainable and biodiverse setting that complements the restored castle. By safeguarding their character while introducing thoughtful improvements, the gardens will become a vibrant green space for relaxation, community events and exploration – ensuring they remain a cherished asset for generations to come.
The project is made possible through joint funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Newark & Sherwood District Council, supported by the Government’s Towns Fund initiative via Newark Town Board. We are proud to be contributing our landscape expertise as part of an experienced and dedicated project team, helping to safeguard the castle’s legacy, protect its gardens and shape its future as a vibrant cultural and community asset.
