We have been appointed to lead the detailed design and delivery stages of the Newark Castle and Gardens project. This ambitious scheme will breathe new life into one of Newark’s most treasured landmarks, enhancing the castle itself while reimagining its surrounding landscape. The transformation will create a revitalised centrepiece that celebrates Newark’s rich heritage and provides an inspiring destination for both the local community and visitors from further afield.
Newark Castle has stood proudly at the entrance to the town for almost 900 years and remains deeply cherished by local residents. The Gatehouse, recognised by Historic England as the most complete example of its kind in England, highlights the importance of conserving the castle’s remaining structures while finding innovative ways to bring them to life. This ground-breaking project will see the reconstruction of rooms and the creation of new gallery spaces, made accessible via a lift to the first floor. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the castle’s rich history through engaging, interactive displays designed to be both educational and enjoyable. A new tower-top viewing platform will further enhance the visitor experience, offering breathtaking views across the Trent Valley.
Equally important is the enhancement and protection of Newark Castle’s beautiful gardens. These historic grounds will be carefully revitalised to provide a welcoming, sustainable and biodiverse setting that complements the restored castle. By safeguarding their character while introducing thoughtful improvements, the gardens will become a vibrant green space for relaxation, community events and exploration – ensuring they remain a cherished asset for generations to come.
The project is made possible through joint funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Newark & Sherwood District Council, supported by the Government’s Towns Fund initiative via Newark Town Board. We are proud to be working alongside an experienced and dedicated project team to deliver a scheme that will safeguard the castle’s legacy, protect its gardens and shape its future as a vibrant cultural and community asset.
